Ok I get the difference and you use the one suitable to the occasion. Thing is how do you know or tell if your shells can perform a citadel penetration or not. Just trying to hit something is a challenge for me when I do hit I want to know if I am giving myself the best chance to do some damage. Some sort of rule of thumb ?

Aim at the waterline, roughly under the smoke stacks. Will give you your best chances.

As for which ammo...rough rule of thumb is

BB- AP vs BB and CA, HE vs DD and CV
CA-AP vs CA/CV, HE vs BB and DD
DD- "you have torps...why are you firing your guns? They can see you easier if you do!!"
But seriously if you HAVE to fire, its likely to be at another DD, but either way HE all day.
